Encouraging More Women into Tech
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of attending a powerful event hosted by Morgan Stanley and WeAreTheCity at Canary Wharf, focused on inspiring women to step forward as tech role models.
The event brought together passionate individuals and not-for-profit organisations committed to increasing the number of women entering the technology sector.
How the Event Worked
Using a speed networking format, attendees could meet various organisations actively supporting gender diversity in tech.
They offered practical resources and advice on how to take meaningful action — from mentoring and speaking in schools to supporting local initiatives or online communities.
Hearing from Maggie Philbin
One of the highlights was hearing from Maggie Philbin, CEO of TeenTech and well-known technology reporter from Tomorrow’s World.
Maggie shared her thoughts on what makes a great role model:
“The technology industry is full of potential role models, yet many women believe they have to be a ‘super woman’ to deserve the title of role model.
Whether you feel comfortable speaking at a school assembly, running an after-school club, sharing expertise via Skype or mentoring a fellow female technologist, we hope to offer something for all aspiring role models at this event.”
Her message was clear: you don’t have to be perfect — just willing.
Why This Matters
So many talented women in tech hesitate to call themselves role models. But visibility matters.
If you’re already in tech, you’re already a potential role model — and your voice could inspire the next generation.
This event reminded me that every small action counts, and that support, visibility, and encouragement are powerful tools for change.
Truly inspirational stuff.
